A good set of commercial dumbbells will be an important piece of fitness equipment no matter the size of your gym. Dumbbells are widely used across all forms of exercise and future members will look for a good set of dumbbells ranging in sizes.
Commercial Grade Dumbbells
Commercial dumbbells should be durable and high quality in order to avoid frequent replacements. The initial investment in commercial grade equipment will be worth it in the long run.
The most common type of dumbbells are rubber hex dumbbells. Rubber hex dumbbells are great because they will prevent rolling and they are typically the most inexpensive option. Rubber coated dumbbells are durable and rarely chip or break. Most rubber hex dumbbells are made of steel and coated with rubber with a knurled handle for comfort.
Urethane dumbbells would be considered a more premium dumbbell. The urethane coating will be amongst the highest commercial quality in the fitness industry. Urethane dumbbells will last a long time, due to the durable urethane coating.
Neoprene dumbbells are another premium style of commercial dumbbells. Similar to urethane dumbbells and unlike rubber, this style of coating will not be greasy or smelly at all. Urethane dumbbells and neoprene dumbbells may be available in other shapes rather than just rubber hexagon.
Purchasing full dumbbell sets is a great way to ensure you'll have completely cohesive dumbbells. Even if the style and shape don't change, sometimes the logo or other small details can change and especially in a commercial setting it's nice to have cohesive looking fitness equipment. Dumbbell sets typically have the option of purchasing 5-50 lbs, 50-100 lbs or the whole set from 5-100 lbs. Some brands may have other weight increment options for dumbbell sets as well.
Building Your Own Set
Usually, in a commercial gym you'll need to go up in 5lb increments in order to accommodate all the different fitness levels at your gym. In between sizes can also be useful for members, such as 8lbs, 12lbs, 17.5lbs, 22.5lbs and so on. If you are buying rubber coated dumbbells for a demographic where you know they won't use certain sizes then a full pre-made set may not be the best option. For example, if you are buying equipment for a high level powerlifting gym you may not need the smaller increments like 3 or 5 lbs and if you are buying for a 50+ condo building you may not need the higher sizes like 80-100lbs
Adjustable dumbbells are a great option, particularly for saving space in your fitness facility. There's definitely a convenience factor to having a full set of 5 to 100lb dumbbells ready to pick up, but again if you are tight on space then adjustable dumbbells can save a lot of it. Popular commercial grade adjustable dumbbells include Ironmaster and Powerblock. Both of these brands offer easy to adjust dumbbells, suitable for most age groups.
